Peace Corps: Philippines

The program in the Philippines is the second oldest in the Peace Corps. It began with the arrival of 123 education Volunteers in October 1961. Since then, more than 8,000 Volunteers have served in the Philippines. In June 1990, the program was suspended because of a threat from Communist rebels; it resumed in 1992. Currently, Volunteers are addressing the country’s development priorities through projects in youth, education, environment and business development.

I’ve been thinking more and more about applying. Applicants don’t have a choice of where they are assigned, but hopefully there are some strings I could pull somewhere, right?

Donorcratic govern ment (n): a system of government based on the rule by a small number of people from varying backgrounds (social, economic cultural) who have learned valuable lessons from the terrible/awesome choices they have made in the past (and present, and probably the future). These individuals have strong connections to government, academic and civil society institutions, groups and leaders. They rule with an iron fist to preserve various human rights (as outlined in the undhr) with the flexibility to adjust policies in reaction to market fluctuations and the inherent needs for human beings to relax and have fun once in a while.

Obama listens from a back stairwell as he is introduced in Muscatine, Iowa. It was his second or third speech of the day. Unlike many of the politicians I have photographed in the past, I find it is easy to get a photograph of Obama alone. He lets his staff do their jobs and not fuss over him.

It was primary morning in New Hampshire. Barack and Michelle Obama had been campaigning separately all week. In the first few months of 2008 their private time seemed to consist of a few crossover moments in back hallways before rallies. This moment was rare and you could tell they just loved being able to sit together.
